Oroquieta Vacation Guide
2,5 - 3 hours bus drive from Dapitan is Oroquieta, a true paradise on earth. The acctual city is small, but still bussy and can cover most basic needs, and the hotels are good. Once you get outside the city center you'll find an incredible nature and fresh good quiet beaches.
Why this place is not crawling with tourists goes beyond my ability of understanding - but I'm not complaining because having this spot to yourself is really amazeing.
The original name of Oroquieta was Layawan which was used from 1861 - 1879. The name Layawan came from the visayan term layaw, which were used by the christian settlers for strayed wild animals.
The christians arrived in layawan from Bohol and Cebu and settled with the original tribe the Suban-on. The Christians described the uban-on's as peacefull, quiet and innocent people. But the suban-on's did not like living side by side with the settlers and moved towards the mountains.
There are many stories regarding the name Oroquieta, one is that it comes from spanish oro (gold) and quieta (found), another is that Father Thomas Casado changed the name as a tribute to the spanish general Domingo Morriones Y Murillo, who was born in Oroquieta, Pamplona, spain.
