Oriental Vacation Guide
Oriental is a small village nestled in between 5 creeks off of the Neuse River in eastern North Carolina. Oriental was settled in 1870 and named for a Steamer ship that sunk in 1862 off the coast of Cape Hatteras.
It's population of approximately 875 is far outweighed by it's population of 3,000 boats, predominantly sailboats...and this is why it is called "The Sailing Capital of North Carolina". It is popular with cruisers (Mile Marker 182 on the Intracoastal Waterway) and most who live here first came by sea. This portion of the Neuse River, where it empties into the Pamlico Sound, is known as the widest river in America.
Oriental hosts the Croaker Festival in July, the Dragon Walk on New Year's Eve, and the Spirit of Christmas, as well as an annual Oriental Cup Regatta and a Rotary Club Tarpon Fishing Tournament. It is a quaint village with lots of personality and a place you can't miss if you are in eastern North Carolina!

Suzanne, (sgwaltney) had a birthday on July 27th and I looked at her profile photo and thought, I could give her a gift by changing her shot. This one was more subtle than most of the others I have done. The background wasn't even, and the whole picture seemed a little dull, maybe it was old or cop…

I've come to Oriental multiple times b/c my mom lives here. Now that she's moving away, I realize how much I'll be missing. Here are some shots from "The Sailing Capital of North Carolina". There are 3-4 times as many boats here as there are inhabitants! It's a cute town with only a few stores & restaurants. I hope you enjoy the pics!
