Organic Spice Farm
Organic Spice Farm Thekkady Reviews
Organic Spice Farm Feb 26, 2011
we got directions from the hotel staff, pre-paid (read "overpaid") for admission and drove there. The drive took mere 10 minutes and en-route we also saw many other similar properties.
The organic spice farm is set up as a demonstration site. If you have visited Larry and Penny Thompson Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead, Florida (highly recommended) , this one is different and much more compact.
An english-speaking tour guide took us thru the property covering 5 acres. We learnt about locally grown spices, commerical fruits and vegetables. We saw cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, pepper, cinnamon, all-spice, basil, mint, coriander, lemon-grass, tapioca, jack-fruit, coffee, cocoa, tea, coconuts, pineapples, tomatoes, sapotex, guava, tobacco, bananas, rice, grapes...
It was an interesting one-hour and at the end we were given the opportunity to purchase locally grown organic spices and teas. This place cannot be categorized as eco-tourism but it is definetely educative.
