Orchid Hotel City Hall Yangon Reviews
Close location to Sule Pagoda and downtown Yangon Feb 23, 2014
Orchid Hotel City Hall is one of two Orchid Hotels in Yangon. Apparently it used to be called City Star Hotel Yangon, as shown in Google Maps. It is conveniently located near Sule Pagoda, right behind Yangon City Hall along Maha Bandoola Garden Street and SE Pin Street.
This hotel is a good base for exploring the nearby areas if one prefers to walk - it is within a kilometer of Yangon Central Railway, and less than 2 km. from Scott/Bogyoke Market. At night, you can see the glow of Sule Pagoda right outside your balcony if you are facing SE Pin St.
However the hotel does not offer great value for its price, amenity wise. Walk-in rates are exhorbitant - USD185 for a family room, but are cheaper if booked through hotel.com or agoda.com. Rooms are often sold out, we experienced a Saturday stay where a tourist was trying to convince the checkin staff to acccommodate him and his group for a few nights.
The hotel has two elevators (since the top floor is the 9th floor), and less than 10 rooms per floor. The rooms have basic amenities, and the floor is usually made of wood although some have old carpeting. The family rooms are big and can accommodate 4 people, although the standard rooms have either a king sized bed or two twin beds. There is hot water although many of the bathroom fixtures are old and the water pressure is not strong enough. Toothbrush/toothpaste, soap, shampoo are some of the amenities included. Likewise there are two complementary bottles of water daily and instant coffee single serve packs (with sugar and creamer). A mini fridge contains a few softdrink and beer cans. The TV is a 21" CRT flat screen, the aircon is split type with remote control. There is an electric thermos which one can use for boiling water to be used for coffee and tea. And there are two pairs of slippers used for the bathroom area so that guests need not walk barefoot on the wooden floor.
Overall the biggest value of the hotel is its location, but the price is far more than you'd pay for equivalent or even better hotels in Mandalay or Bagan.
