Nice enough quick visit Apr 02, 2011
For a site that is yards away from the Udine Cathedral, this has undergone some change! This site was originally the place for a theatre, which was built in the seventeenth century under the orders of the ruling Count, most likely in order to annoy the sober and saintly atmosphere of the cathedral next door. From then, it was changed into a church in the eighteenth century and then wonderfully frescoed up by the master Tiepolo approximately a century later. While the artist’s work is meant to make this a key visit, I didn’t think it was that special unfortunately. At best, it’s worth a quick five-minute visit after you’re done at the cathedral, if that. What was rather lovely was the enormous amount of worshippers here; they have a choir and a very healthy congregation, which was nice to see and pretty much why the church was built for in the first place. It was quite ironic too, especially as the cathedral is next door and the Count from the seventeenth century had very different designs for the place!
