Oratorio de San Pellegrino Bominaco Reviews
Largely unknown gem Aug 17, 2010
Free is technically correct but it would not go down well if you failed to give a small donation to the keyholder/guide.
This is one of two remarkable chapels at the small village of Bominaco in L'Aquila Province of Abruzzo, Italy. If it were in Tucany or even Umbria, you would probably have to join a long queue to see inside. As it is, you have a fair chance of being on your own!
Judged from the exterior, this could be taken as the poor relation of the other chapel, the Abbey of Santa Maria Assunta. It is quite crude and possibly date back to the 8th century CE. Howevr the interior is something else entirely! practically every square inch is covered in ancient frescoes showing scenes based on the life of Christ as portrayed in the Bible and of the life of St Pellegrino.
When I went there, I was lucky enough to find restorers there working on the artwork and apparently eager to practice their English with me. I was impressed to hear of the art qualificatios and experience, as well as qualifications in art history, that were requied for this job.
See http://www.inabruzzo.it/ada/provincia%20l%27Aquila/A-C/Bominaco%20-%20San%20Pellegrino/index.html for some wonderful pictures.
Part of the list Italy and Sicily - various visits
