Love, love, LOVE this place! Sep 14, 2009
We ate at the Operncafe for lunch and dinner two days in a row! What a wonderful place to try a new dessert. The glass cases had a '31-flavors' feel... cake after cake, torte after torte. Our routine was always the same: have a bowl of soup (Blumenkohlsuppe was the best - cauliflower soup), then followed by a slice of cake or torte. The atmosphere is lovely; you can eat outside or indoors.

The only bad thing about the restaurant was that at the time, they allowed smoking and we reeked of smoke after each visit. That was a few years ago and I'm thinking they've done away with smoking in restaurants....

We're planning another trip to Berlin in 2010 and the Operncafe will be on our list of 'must see' places!

The Operncafe is probably one of the most elegant places to

get dessert in all of Europe. The building it

is housed in was originally constructed in the 1700's, and although it has gone

through extensive renovations throughout the years, it still has a sort of old

world, classy charm, befitting of a former residence of princes and princesses.

My friends and I showed up in true American fashion, wearing just jeans and

sweatshirts, but I felt a bit underdressed compared to the other people there.

Nevertheless, the service was very friendly, and despite our relatively ratty

attire we were not made to feel unwelcome.

This cafe is billed as one of the largest dessert bars in Germany, but

since we had arrived fairly late in the night, about half of the shelves were

already empty. There was still a large selection of cakes to choose from, but I

wish I could have been there to see the selection at its fullest. The cakes

themselves were quite good, although not as sweet and rich as I would have

liked them. This might have just been because the more artery-threatening

flavors had already been consumed, however.

Bottom line: a comfortable, elegant place to get dessert and chat with friends.
The desserts.
Elegant seating and dining area.
