Open Top Bus Macau Reviews
A glimse of Macau Aug 06, 2014
The best way to know any town when you are short of time to take an extensive tour,is to hitch yourself to a Hop on hop off tour if there be one. Like most cities promoting tourist attractions Macau has its own.It is called the open top bus Macau sight seeing tour.A day pass issued costs 100 HKD for senior citizens/children and 150 HKD for adults and permits you to hitch on to or hop of from the bus which goes all around town and stops at specified locations which are near tourist attractions or landmarks.Tickets could be purchased at the arrival of the ferry terminal and at hotel concierge's.The bus trip takes you around the land marks of Macau in 45 minutes and you can visit the historic sites and attractions to hop on to any one of the two buses which makes about 10 trips each.
There are ten stops in all and a brochure given at the time of purchase of your pass will be your only guide. No individual audio is provided. It is an open top bus and one has to forget the comfort of air conditioned comfort. You are not permitted to hold an umbrella while on the move and as given to understand would be provided raincoats if it happens to rain. The tour for all purposes begins from the Ferry terminal and stops at Fishermans wharf a newly built complex of restaurants, shops, convention center and hotel. The Macau science center would be stop two, the statue of Kun Lam or mother of mercy overlooking the bay stop three, the casinos Wynn stop four and Lisboa stop five. The sixth stop at New Yaohan complex is where most of the people alight to walk through the narrow streets for a few kilometers to reach the historic Leal Senado square, the ruins of St.Paul and Mount fort and museum. At least half a day is required to hurriedly go through these attractions. The Macau radio tower is stop seven and stop eight is where one alights to hurriedly take a look at the maritime museum and the Temple of A ma a few Kilometers further. The church of Penha and the Moorish barracks further along side is worth a look though time consuming. The next would be to alight at the eighth stop named Ponte 16 or hotel Sofitel,to visit the Theater Dom Pedro, the churches of St.Dominic, Augustine, Lawrence and Luis de Cameos garden. This could also be accessed from stop six through Leal Senado. Stop nine is the red market and also where the whole sale market is located. The route is there after through and around the Senado square towards the ferry terminal. On the way you can get a glimpse of the famed Guia hill Fortress and light house the symbol of Macau in its currency. This is not accessible en route the whole tour though I did love to visit this great land mark that had withstood, the Moorish and Dutch invasions as part of the tour.
Macau center is a small place with narrow streets and walking through them is hassle free. All big vehicles are prohibited entry into these lanes which lead to the main attractions.
The Guia hill fort, church and light house and botanical garden is near the ferry terminal and I had to take a metro bus to reach there.Having taken the metro bus I learnt that all metro buses do the same as the hop on hop off bus although each of them pass through different sections of the city. All metro bus stops are well maintained and each stop has an index of the buses and routes from which one can easily know where he is and where and how he could go.
If you are to be confused as I was on a few occasions, never bother, for you will find many friendly English speaking Philippinos, who live and work in Macau and if you inquire them, they will with a happy smile, promptly guide you to your destination.
Thinking of the hop on hop off open bus tour I felt that it gives you an overall perspective of a portion of the town and in part assists a walking tour.Literally it may seem that you are being taken for 'a ride' at your own small cost but sure enough it is a worthwhile experience.
