One Florence Close (www.oneflorenceclose.com) is right across the road from the main Kovan MRT station, so a little bit further out but still only about 15 minutes to the centre (cost of about S$1.50). The little bit of travelling time is nothing compared to the cheaper food and accommodation away from the centre - you can buy a VERY BIG meal for S$2 at the food market behind the MRT station. Heartland Mall is also at the station where you can buy anything else you might need.
One Florence Close is a hostel so the rooms are on the small side, but the beds are extremely comfortable. There are no en-suites but the showers are quite new, there is copious hot and cold water and the bathrooms and toilets are kept spotless all the time. There is a kitchen, but food is so cheap around here you're not likely to use it, apart from for tea and coffe (which is provided). BIG BONUS - there is a computer in the lounger, and the internet is free!
The hostel is very quiet so not really a party place, but that suits people like us fine. The owners are really friendly and bookings can be done via email. We have a private room with a big queen size bed, TV and airconditioning (current price S$70)- the aircon is fantastic when you get back from lots of sightseeing in the Singapore humidity, it kicks in really quickly and is easily adjustable with your remote.
Overall, the hostel is fantastic for those wanting to get great facilities at cheaper prices than the city - highly recommended.
PS: There are two fluffy cats, Romeo and Pepper, which are extremely friendly and a nice touch to remind you of home.
