Once Beautiful, Now to much.... Jaco Reviews
Jaco, Costa Rica. Once beautiful now a bit much... Apr 22, 2010
Jaco, Costa Rica, a once small beach town and fishing village years gone by.
In my earlier travels to this to this beach town, (15 years ago or so) It was quiet and peaceful with a beautiful bay and rap around, sandy beach.
A few small, but delicious restaurants. Fresh sea foods, Beans and rice, tasty. Food was good and very reasonable in price. Living quarters, cold showers ( you really don't need hot showers in there climate) some with A/C, most with just a ceiling fan. 8 to 11 bucks a night, right on the beach.
The known Beatel's Bar was already there, with the working girls trying to scratch there living there. This was as bad as it got (If that kind of stuff is bad to you)
Now let's get to the present, 2008, 2009, 2010......
Poor Jaco has become over run with so called 4 and 3 star hotels, the beach has become a filthy, sand flea infested, eat you to the bone, walking from one side to the next of its shores. Weird, out of place night clubs and restaurants. The main drag is a cluster @$#* of bars and seedy behavior. Crack heads down every ally and turn. There are still some really good people living there, most good friends of mine. But what a drag..
Tourism, Drugs and Greedy land developers have jacked this place up. Hold tightly to your pocket books and bags, always where shoes and best to take a cab or hire a local kid (make sure he's not a crack head!) to keep and eye on your locked car.
The police have been amped up a lot here because of this tragic happening to a once beautiful beach town, yet it does not seem to have helped much at all. Thank god there are a lot of still unspoiled places to see and stay at. Costa Rica is still one of my most favorite South American destinations, bar none. Where the rain forest meets the ocean.....
