Omena Hotel Eerikinkatu Rates and Deals
Omena Hotel Eerikinkatu Helsinki Reviews
cheap and functional Jun 13, 2010
Omena hotels are a great concept for the seasonned budget traveller. The concept involves a minimum amount of staff.
The Omena hotel in Eerikinkatu has a good location only minutes from the central bus station, Form shopping centre and the railway station.
Bookings can only be made on-line and upon confirmation, one gets a room number and door code. With this code the front door as well as the door to your room can be opened during your reservation (exact hours mentiooned on the booking, i.e. from 4 PM upon arrival till 12.00 PM on departure.)
There is no reception and even though the room is cleaned upon arrival, the bed still has to be made (sheets provided).
The room sleeps 4 (1 twin bed + 2 extra beds in the sofa) and is clean and functional. A few nice extra(s in the room are the coffee and tea-making facilities and the microwave.
Breakfast is served by an outsourced restaurant accross the road and offered good value for money.
Negative aspects are that the local youngsters have discovered this cheap concept and book rooms for a night on the town; hence lots of noice in the hallways during the night.
The hotel has no luggage room. I arrived early afternoon and had no chance to drop my luggage before the door code was activated at 4 PM.
Another negative aspect is the lack of customer service, not even from the chain's emergency central. A colleague of mine arrived late at night from the airport to the hotel and something was amiss with her door code and it turned out her booking was invalid. Luckily I could let her in or she would have been middle of the night on the street with her luggage. Via the emergency phone we asked assistance to reactivate her booking, but it could not be done over the phone. We had to make a new booking via the courtesy computer on the ground floor of the hotel, which kept getting stuck (software problem). It took about half an hour to get her a room and only for one night, while her intial booking was for 3 nights.
Eventually all worked out fine, but if I wouldn't have been at the hotel already, there was no chance at all she could have entered the premises to use the emergency phone or to reactivate her booking.
To recap, the room in itself is perfectly fine and above average for 3* accommodation. On the flip side, the noice at night and lack of customer service make me reconsider repeating the experience. We used the hotel because of our company's reduced travel budget policy, but wouldn't stay there again.
