A Visit to the Ancient Olympic Games May 30, 2007
Another UNESCO site that is worth a visit while in Greece is the ancient site of Olympia. Previously, pretty much only a long bus ride from Athens, Olympia is now a common stop on Eastern Mediterranean cruises as the nearby town of Katakolon built a cruise ship friendly port!

Olympia was the site of the anicent Olympic Games and loated in the western Peloponnisos (Peloponnesus). Fortunately, I visited shortly before the forest fires that plagued this area in mid 2007. Although very warm in the summer, the tour is definitely worth it.

Besides the ability to stand in the original Olympic Stadium, Olympia contains some of the best Greek treasures and artifacts. The museum next door houses some of the main artifacts such as Hermes of Praxiteles, Nike of Paionios, and the most impressive sculptured ornaments from the Temple of Zeus. The pediments are incredible and massive.

Most tour companies offer a walk through tour of Olympia and then admission to the museum which I would recommend visiting first as there is a lot of the history of Olympia explained and then you can visit the site where these artifacts were discovered.

Olympia Archaeological Site Jul 07, 2007
We visited Olympia archaeological site in july 2007, just before the forest fires (luckily!). The site is very large and although it is very hot in july over there (40C) there is a lot of shade because of the trees and if you bring enough water you'll be fine.

My tip is to get a guided tour, because you will get a good idea how everything must have been when the Olympics where there.

Because the site is very large, you never feel like it is crowded, although there are lot's of people.

There is also a museum, which is worth a visit. If only they could have a proper airconditioning system (or it could have been broken.)
