Beautiful church turned fantastic restaurant and bar Mar 11, 2011
Cafe Olivier in Utrecht, The Netherlands, is very near the train station if you go through the mall (Hoog Catherijne), out the back, and turn right at the mall exit. It's not obvious from the outside but there is a small sign and once inside you find yourself in a giant church with an extremely high ceiling. It is now a restaurant offering very high quality Belgian food (average price for high quality food in the NL), as well as a vast variety of delicious beers on tap and in bottles. It is a fantastic place to eat or just go for the beer and the atmosphere!

Olivier is a café restaurant near the station and Hoog Catherine shopping centre in Utrecht, inside an old church. It specialises in Belgian beers and Mussels, although there are a lot of other things on the menu too. Mussels (in late 2007) were around 17€, and beers started at 3€ and worked up according to how special/ strong they were. There's quite a range of trippels, dark beers and other specialist kinds of beers that you can't find everywhere, and certainly not this far north of the Belgian Border.

The surroundings are the first thing that impressed me - the high vaulted ceilings and statues of Mary and various saints, gazing down on wooden tables, old beer adverts, a bar, and stencilled Jaque Breuil lyrics. The setting still managed to be cozy, despite the ceilings, and after looking at the several page long beer menu, we ordered.

Service was pretty good, considering that it was so busy, and quite fast. The food turned up promptly and the mussels were excellent. Various friends had salmon and salad and their food looked lovely too. Portions were a good size, and the bill turned up when we needed it. The toilets are clean, although they are also up a spiral staircase so this wouldn't be the ideal place to go if you were on crutches or something!

One course meal with shared bread and three small beers plus tip came to 30€, and I had the cheapest sort of beers, so it's a little on the pricey side by local standards if you decide to, for example, try the 8€ trippels. But I think it is well worth a trip and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I would definately go again.

PS I did go again, and had game stew. The service was excellent and so was the food. So it's likely to be consistant. :)
