Best NC-style BBQ around Jul 03, 2011
Ole Time Barbecue is definitely the favorite easten NC-style barbecue joint for me and my friends in the Raleigh area. Eastern NC-style barbecue is a vinegar and red pepper-based sauce. They have other sauce options, too, if you want options. You'll hear a lot of people mention Allen and Sons or Bullock's BBQ as being good too, and they are great options, but they don't compare to Ole Time's quality food, friendly staff, unique and charming atmosphere, and small town feel. This is NC barbecue at its best. I have to visit every time I'm back in NC. While you're in NC, you need to try some eastern NC barbecue, and you need to get it at Ole Time for the best experience. They do take-away orders as well. Definitely the best way to feed a crowd since there is very limited seating inside. Don't forget the butter for the hush puppies! They melt in your mouth if you get them fresh from the fryer. Absolutely delicious!

At Ole Time Barbecue, pork is king...and I'm not just talking about the food. This barbecue joint is a dive...it is located by the railroad tracks, has limited parking, and has a small dining area with a few tables and a lunch counter. Although it is small, this joint has a homey feel with its walls decked out in pig decor and laughable bumper stickers.

Ole Time Barbecue's slogan is "A Great Place to Get Porked". And that's no lie! My favorite pork based meal is their St. Louis Style Baby Back Ribs which are juicy and tender. Ole Time's barbecue sauce is not like the store bought varieties. Their sauce is much more tangy and thin than sweet and thick. But the tangy sauce goes well to cut the meatiness of the ribs.

Ole Time's sides are just as delicious. I like the fried apple sticks and the sweet potato sticks but they also have French fries, fried okra, and mashed potatoes. A Southern meal wouldn't be a meal without hushpuppies. At Ole Time, these fried corny morsels come out hot and yummy. Alas, a meal at Ole Time Barbecue has to end with their homemade banana pudding. I would buy two, one for after your meal at Ole Time Barbecue and the second to enjoy later!
