Ole Frijole Fresno Reviews
Amazed that it was still open. Dec 07, 2012
Fresno has had this restaurant for fifty years. We used to pay a visit there, as well as the one that used to be in Visalia from time to time. We remembered a pretty nice selection of not only salads, but all of the usual items on their Mexican menu, from mashed potatoes and gravy, to rice and beans, fried chicken, enchiladas, Chili Rellenos, Chili Verde, Tamales, Baked and fried fish, taquitos and make your own Tacos. They even had a few desserts, from cake, pudding, soft-serve ice cream. And, of course, soft drinks and coffee. We remembered that the prices were quite low, and the place was quite clean and well maintained.
Did I mention that it is a buffet? It is.
We hadn’t been in for quite a number of years, but were in the mood for Mexican food and were in Fresno, so we stopped by to see what had changed. It was a Friday evening, so for dinner they featured Fried fish, Fried Shrimp, and Tamales.
The salad area now covers much more of the buffet area than it used to. Lots to offer and many dressings too. But the main offerings had shrunk to a much small area and quite a few were not offered on a daily basis. We did have small fried shrimp, deep fried, but the fried fish looked to small to consider. The tamales, and there were plain cheese and meat and cheese, were only okay, but not well filled. There was some beef from a roast that had been cut and chopped down to make taco, along with ground beef, two cheeses, tomato pieces, lettuce well chopped, and bottled hot sauce.
I’m sorry to end this review with what by now you can already tell is a less than stellar word for them. Yes, it is still clean, and the staff keeps the tables cleaned and wiped down. But the food was only so-so and there weren’t very many choices. I think there were only about ten people eating at 5:30 on a Friday evening. We will not go back, and do not recommend it to anyone.
