Oldenzaal Vacation Guide

Oldenzaal is a little historic town (since around the year 700 ad, it used to be walled and it still has city rights), in the region called Twente.The town used to be very rich in medieval times upto the 16th/early 17th century. Due to many sieges it lost its central merchants position. The town centre has narrow shopping streets and in the middle the Roman Catholic Sint- Plechelmus Basilic (Building began in about 936 AD). The history of Oldenzaal is the subject of the Palthehuis Museum. This museum organizes also exhibitions of visual art.
Oldenzaal has 2 shopping malls “de Vijfhoek” and “de Driehoek” in the middle of the centre. Here you can do your daily shopping and there are a few nice clothes shops and boutiques. People from Twente “Twentenaren” call Oldenzaal “the town of pleasure” (het stedke van plezeer) because Oldenzaal has a great number of bars, good restaurants and café’s. There is a square surrounded by café’s, which is very nice during the summer and the events organized in Oldenzaal. This town is one of the few towns above the rivers that celebrates Carnaval enthousiastically in February. Also the three days fair “Boeskool is lös” is organized every year in August.
Oldenzaal has a recreation area called Het Hulsbeek. There are possibilities to swim, bike, jog, kart, ride horse, fishing, surf and most of al: relax!
Every year there is an event called Twente Ballooning and a horse riding event called Horse Driving Twente.
