Old town Vigan Jul 09, 2008
Vigan is a small old town in the north of the Philippines. It has made its way to the UNESCO world heritage list in 1999 by being the only surviving old colonial town in the Spanish part of Asia. It was founded in 1572 but most of the houses in town are a lot newer than this. The old church is almost as old as the town itself.
The city was supposed to have been bombed by the Americans during 'World War II but luckily the Japanese left the town just before the bombing were supposed to take place and it was called of in the very last moment.
The city is fairly attractive. All the guidebooks claim it is traditional Spanish colonial style with a bit of Asian mixed in with the Spanish - I actually think it is more the other way around - a primary Asian style with just a little bit of Spanish in the mix. It is fairly interesting to see the town.
But getting to Vigan is quite a journey - it is about 10 hours on a bus from Manila or 6 from Baguio. Hence it is two all day trips to get back and fort to Vigan. Even though the city is an interesting place to go visit - you really need to be keen on seeing an old town to go up there. If you are a bit short on time and got no other reason than Vigan to go to this part of Luzon you should probably leave it and go spend time somewhere more accessible.
