Old Sao Luis Sep 29, 2013
Old Sao Luis is one of the UNESCO protected sites in Brazil. Fort was in the past occupied by French and Dutch, but the most influence comes from Portuguese and their building style. Large number of buildings carry famous Portuguese tiles on outside and inside, very colorful and beautifully designed. City is proud of this tiles and you can see them in advertising, as an invitation to the happenings in the city but the best samples are in the museum. Large portions of the old town are falling apart, and some are a bit integrated in the modern world, but mostly you can walk old cobblestone streets and enjoy the sight. Tourist agencies or hotels have good maps with important places clearly marked and labeled. Whole city is easily walkable.
