Old National Centre Indianapolis Reviews
The Show Must Go On Oct 17, 2015
Remember the Shriners? If you are an aging American like me, that name should raise the image of old guys in fez caps, lol. I thought they had faded into the annals of history, but apparently remain alive and well in Indianapolis. This enormous theater complex was originally built by Shriners in 1909 and is still owned by the “Murat Shriners of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine”. How impressive is that?
Originally named the Murat Theater, it survives as the oldest stage house in downtown Indianapolis. True to Shriner legacy, the building was patterned after Islamic mosques in Egypt and features minarets and terra cotta trim. There are nine areas inside where events may be hosted, with a 2,500 seat performing arts theater and an 1,800 seat concert hall serving as headline facilities. Needless to say, it is enormous.
We ventured there to enjoy Lewis Black, who was appearing in the concert hall, but that same night Raheem DeVaughn perfomed in the concert hall.
The lobby is wonderful. Expansive and richly carpeted with a Middle Eastern vibe, a relaxed environment to await your show. Several bars are dispersed about and while outrageously priced, you are permitted to cart your beverage into the show. You can imagine what a throbbing mass of activity the lobby was as guests for two different shows milled about. The theater was similarly traditional and tasteful. I found it quite comforting to enjoy a plush setting from days gone by. Even though Lewis Black did not require any superior acoustics, you could tell the theater had been designed for excellent sound quality.
The Old National Centre continues to book tons of high profile acts, so if you are visiting Indianapolis I suggest checking out their web site and possibly catching a fun show!
