Old Merzouga camp Nov 27, 2016
Old Merzouga camp is nested in the ruins of the old permanent camp that they called Merzouga. Today’s town went on the other side of the dunes and sprawled to the riches of desert tourism. That is the only way I can explain the number of Riads and palaces in the area, but knowing Berbers for a bit longer, they are probably and mostly faux buildings that are cheaply and bad made to make business with the tourist.

So this ruins are populated temporarily with two families and they are just using two ruined compounds for their cattle and they covered few buildings so that they have houses. Most of the buildings are in the disrepair state. Walls are crumbling, no roofs, and you should watch your step while going around, especially on the upper floors. There are no restrooms or running water so you’ll need to bring everything and watch where you are stepping. That surprised me a bit, because you would think that at least locals set up one place where they go for the restroom and prepared some kind of cleaning station… but they just find their favorite place to squat and do the thing. Anyway, watch out when you are going into darker parts of ruins, you could potentially step onto some fresh droppings.

Place to stay is totally basic, few very thin mattresses and walls covered in blankets. It was warm and cozy inside, so I cared less… The biggest disappointment was food. They made us “traditional beduin lunch” that consisted of a bit of salad (good and tasty), a bit of rice (soaking in oil) and one can of sardines for three of us… We were hungry… finished it like champions and looked for more, but that is NOT local food that we were looking for and taken to the desert to experience…
