Experience Ned Kelly's final hours Sep 03, 2013
I wanted to go to the gaol after i read the book 'True History of the Kelly Gang' by Peter Carey and developed an admiration for the fugitive and Australian outlaw hero of Ned Kelly.
The entrance to the prison is quite steep. It costs $25 per person.
The main gaol part allows you to enter the cells and the main part of the museum is found in each of the cells. Some of the cells show busts of the previous prisoners heads and stories of their lives, conviction and subsequent deaths, as the case often was.
Some very famous Australian convicts were housed here, the most famous being the bushranger and outlaw, Ned Kelly.
Ned Kelly was an Australian born of Irish parents. His father was a convict sent to Tasmania and later settled in Victoria. Through a series of events, some of which are outlined in the prison itself, Ned and his brother Dan and two loyal friends went on the run from the law as 'the Kelly Gang'. He is thought of an Australian Robin Hood, apparently. In his final shootout with the authorities the Kellys had made armour to protect their bodies. My guide book said that the armour is housed in the gaol itself but this is incorrect. The armour is on display in the Melbourne library.
You also get a joint ticket to go into the watchtower which is beside the prison and was used as a semi-prison/holding area for prisoners up to the 1990s. A former prison guard gave us a little tour. That was interesting!
In general, the prison ticket is grossly overpriced and probably not worth $25. It's enjoyable though.
