Old Faithful is about the most well known geyser in the world. It is not the biggest or the most regular but it is the biggest regular geyser. But it suffers from a very large number of misconceptions. It is not slowing down, it does not go off every hour, it does not go off on the hour, it is not getting shorter.

Here is MY system for telling when the next show will begin. Watch the ring of benches that surround the area about 300 feet from the geyser. You’ll see that right after an eruption the benches quickly empty. Then after thirty or forty minutes they begin to fill again. It’s only when the benches become sufficiently full that the pressure from the weight of the tourists pushes down with enough strength to set off the next eruption.

Seriously, this one amazing thing you do not want to miss on your trip to Yellowstone National Park.
