Old Bridge Mostar Reviews
The old bridge Aug 31, 2014
In the middle of Mostar is an old bridge - it had been there for centuries connecting one side of the old town to the other. Back in the old days when it was the only bridge in town it was really essential since you would have to travel for miles to cross the river anywhere else to get to the other side. The bridge is very pretty and the natural center of the old town of Mostar - but unfortunately the real claim to fame for this bridge came in 1993 when Mostar was on the front line of the civil war in the former Yugoslavia.
The Croat forces were positioned only a few hundred meters away from the old bridge which lay inside the Muslim or Bosniak positions. At one stage this bridge became target practice for the Croatian artillery and the bridge was hit by a direct hit and destroyed. For the next 11 years there were no bridge connecting one part of the old town with the other part of old town making local transport very inconvenient since you would have to go across on one of the other bridges a kilometer or so down the river.
Fortunately the bridge has been rebuilt and is once again the central connecting piece of the old town and the main tourist attraction which can be seen from much of the old town.
