Built for war - used for culture! Aug 25, 2010
The overall rating is based on the castle's visual appeal and the cost rating on a simple visit. I know nothing about its acoustics and the cost for the Ballet and Opera festival performances would rate as very expensive. I'm afraid when Pam and I stayed at the nearby Perhehotelli family hotel, the castle was being prepared for the Ballet Festival s we only saw the outside.

The castle was built in the 15th century to defend the area that was then Swedish against attacks from Russia. The town of Savonlinna was built after the castle. With the castle's protection it was meant to be a secure trading area.

Although the castle was meant to withstand cannon fire, by the 18th century it was less immune from attack and was taken by Russia twice, the second time in only two days.
