Thus concludes the trip and the blog back home in Ohio.  A few additions may come shortly and will be annotated here so one will know where to look.  If nothing is entered here the update was typographical in nature. 2/11 Day 5 in Torres del Paine (11/24) - new photo standing in the wind at the overlook Glacier Trekking at Cerro Torre (11/27) - new series of photos of my crossing Rio FitzRoy on the tyrolean traverse. A late season snowstorm
posted by:

A little rain would have been fine.  A lot of rain would have been OK if it had fallen on drier soil.  But we had just finished melting a foot of snow over weekend and the ground was saturated.  So the water had no place to go.  And when 4.9 inches of rain falls in about 30 hours, well it floods.  And we weren't even the worst.  Down in southern Illinois and Missouri some locations had over 12 inches of rain.  The lower Mississippi is going to be dealing wit...

The summer is almost over and I am planing my next trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I am going to try to stop at New Orleans on my trip down to Fort Lauderdale. I had a great time at this road trip that start some time in may from Miami, now is time to go back home. But I am going to keep writing about my experience of my trip. After getting hundreds of email from folks looking simple information such as where to stay I realize the need of honest information on the travel industry. So I am g...

After a very cold night in the tent, we woke to a semi-nice day, not really blue skies, but no rain and it was getting warmer. We packed up the campsite and stowed away our gear. While packing, I noticed that Emilia kept looking for something. After about 15 minutes of watching her, I asked her what was wrong. She looked at me and started crying, she said she lost the ring I gave her a few weeks ago. I told her not to worry about it, it was only a ring. She was so sad and didn't want to leave...

Snow Day!!!!
posted by:
Mar 08, 2008
For once the weather forecasters were right!  Thursday, the people "in the know" began warning about a "big" winter storm heading our way.  We have heard this all before - many times - only to receive a portion of what was predicted.  This time what they called for happened. Beginning late yesterday morning, the snow began to fall.  By late afternoon, several inches were on the ground.  Some schools dismissed students early, and the snow plow operators were beginning...

The Legend of the Seas was my favorite cruise yet.  The ship was beautiful and the ports were better!  We met so many wonderful new people and learned so many new things.  I have a new appreciation for the world around me.  My quote on my profile that states "Don't travel thinking you'll change the places you go. Travel thinking that the places you go will change you." Was very true for me on this trip.  I have a new outlook on many things.   I’m not a negati...

It's funny no matter how much you plan for something, you still have no control over how it plays out. The day of the marathon was nothing like I had envisioned it to be. We woke up at 5:30 AM to pouring down rain and temperatures barely reaching fifty degrees. Luckily I had brought enough clothes for any situation. After a lot of consideration, I chose my outfit, and got ready as quickly as possible. We then had to check out in a hurry, pack up the car, and WALK three blocks in the rain...

Gardens, Herbs, and Peacocks

One of my coworkers told me about Kingwood Center’s yearly herb sale.  I have a large herb garden already but am always looking to expand.  So, at 8:15 a.m., Dan and I headed for Mansfield. It’s relatively easy to find, but we didn’t know that.  Thanks to Liz and Jack (Dan’s Mom and Step-Dad) we found the place.  It was absolutely beautiful.  We headed straight for the sale.  I picked up arugula, watercress, thyme, basil, lavender, and a few other intere...

Happy to share a unique adventure thanks to a brave friend who is an American citizen living in Dubai. The sole regret of the expedition was that my wife did not accompany me.  I thoroughly appreciated her reservations, stemming both from current tensions between the US and Muslim culture as well as the notoriety the Arab culture has for shabby treatment of women.    My gender provided a critical comfort level, but there were two additional reasons contributing to...

So, the drive back to Cleveland was a huge accomplishment.  Koby thought I kept nodding off, but really I just kept looking at the speedometer to make sure I wasn't speeding as badly as I wanted to.  I promise I was so tired I thought I was going to kill us, but we made it to the hotel and as luck would have it found a parking spot right in front of the hotel...yay - saved $16!  Bright and early we woke up the next morning to get this day started.  It was a beautifu...

Birthday Bash and Fishing

With family scattered in other Ohio and Indiana cities, Memorial Day weekend provided us a chance to all get together to help Mom celebrate her 76th birthday!  With the help of Dad, we would all surprise Mom with a lunch near their summer get away on Catawba Island near Port Clinton, Ohio.  This area has grown into a "trendy" summer spot on Lake Erie, but to Mom and Dad, the trailer (now called a condominium) is a place to relax!  They love to fish, boat, and visit old friends....

After our tour at Malabar Farms, we headed over to the Kingwood estate in Mansfield itself.  The house was free to walk around.  Unlike Malabar however, the residence has been changed quite a bit since it was a home.  For example, several rooms have been turned into offices or libraries.  Also, since there wasn't a tour, we didn't learn much about the house or the family (might explain why I can't remember their history at the moment...) The gardens were much more satisfy...

Haggis and scotch and bagpipes (Oh my!)

For the past five years on or about January 25th, a group gets together for the annual Robert Burns supper.  The night starts with appetizers.  As you can see from the picture, a very traditional program is followed.  Burns poetry is read in the traditional lowland Scots, music is played, and a traditional meal is served.  Yes, there are selections other than haggis, but at least TRYING the Scottish dish is recommended and all part of the experience. Anyone...
