You know how being in the right place at the right time is rewarding? Well, the other evening my daughter, son-in-law and I were out in the country heading to a small town about 7 miles west of Upper Sandusky on a fund raising mission. As we were leaving town, it began to sprinkle, but as we traveled further west the sun came out from behind the clouds. We turned at the last intersection before our destination when looking back to the east, this beautiful rainbow emerged! &nb...

Okay, so we've had to cancel school for all the following reasons so far this year:
1. snow
2. ice
3. flooding
4. fog
When I woke up, there wasn't even a delay. We were going to school on time. However, when the busses got out, they discovered very patchy, dense fog, so they radioed back that they could get the high school kids okay, but put the elementary on a 2-hour delay. (Our busses go get all the high school kids and drop them off at school, then go back out for the elem...

With both my husband and I having the day off, we decided to leave Upper for the day. Our destination was the Amish Country in the Holmes County area of Ohio. This area is a step back in time with the Amish living the plain life - no electricity, cars, or modern conveniences. It is a favorite destination for many people and a nice trip that can be completed in one day.
Our first stop was in Loudenville, Ohio, at one of my favorite furniture stores - Amish Oak Furniture.&nbs...

Okay, by this point I'm tired, hot, a bit grouchy, and we still have about 3 hours of work to do in Chillicothe. We dropped the truck off at Portage Lakes so one of the other guys could take it back to home base in New Castle. Then we met up with two of the other crew who gave us a ride back to the rest stop where the truck that originally had broken down (and was now "fixed" - more about that later) so we could make the 2.5 hour drive BACK to Chillicothe and finish...

Another beautiful day in Upper Sandusky shining down on the NOVFA convention. The delegates and officers assemble to take care of business. Besides business, the convention meeting has a memorial service for all member departments that have experienced deaths of current and retired firefighters. A drum and bagpipe group came from Toledo to participate. After a the business at hand, a past president's luncheon is held before the grand parade steps off at 1:30 pm.

Last night we arrived in Ohio, I was too tired to do more than post those motel pictures in the previous entry. Now I’m a little more awake… I’m eating the motel’s free continental breakfast (Which consists of a tiny microscopic muffin and a small cup of coffee…) Eric is taking a shower. I have a little time to write before we hit the road again.
so here’s a detailed recap of the first day of our road trip.
We got a late start on our road trip. The fact that we were too excited...

The Ohio Theater is an old movie palace built in the 1920's. It's located downtown, across the street from the Statehouse. CAPA has restored the theater (and continues to do so), while specifically retaining the means for actually showing movies. Every summer, the CAPA movie series shows a variety of films. This year's schedule included Grease, The Princess Bride, Caddyshack, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Sound of Music, North by Northwest (Hitchcock), Sunset Boulevard and Dr. No. Toda...

The trip from Chicago, Illinois was fun, met a guy named Bob in my coach car and we ended up talking most of the trip in the lounge car. He was on his way to Boston to do some work as a house renovator. The train was late getting into Toledo, Ohio because of heavy freight traffic on the Norfolk Southern rail line. Amtrak has been having problems lately with them, usually the train isn't late getting into the Toledo station.Once we arrived, I found my car in the parking lot, loaded up th...

A couple TB friends have asked about my hobby - pyrotechnician! Well, let me try to explain! I set up and shoot the beautiful fireworks you see that light up the sky! Several years ago, I began an association with a guy who sold the fireworks to our local Chamber of Commerce. I'm also on the local fire department whose members have set up and shot the local Independence Day display. Once I met Jon, I first began as his assistant and have since hired my own crew, ...

Yesterday, I worked for Grandpa washing, painting, and detailing golf carts. Grandpa gets MANY random visitors during the day. Grandpa was out of the shop so I was left to field visitors. One of them turned out to be my new neighbor. He seems like a very nice man. I hope my loud music doesn't bother him too much.
The house inspector is coming today. This means a couple things. 1. I can get into the house to measure windows for curtains and things. 2. I can take ...

It's the summer of 2008 and time to light up the sky once again! Last year, I somehow adopted the nickname "Sparkler" and it stuck. Sparkler (who is a member of "Billy Boom's Crew") is now off to pick up this weekends' fireworks.
This weekend is our community Relay For Life (a fundraiser for cancer research). My family (Mom and Dad) donated the fireworks that are shot in celebration of local cancer survivors. I'm happy to report that I will be pushing buttons this Fri...

Where do I start? Saturday, May 17, 2008, eight family members and myself participated in the Komen Race For The Cure through the streets of downtown Columbus, Ohio. All of us dedicated our participation in celebration of my mother's life and others who have had life altered by breast cancer.
Before I relate our wonderful day, let me tell you why we were participating. Last July during a routine check up, the doctor became suspicious of a benign lump that had be...

Waking up Saturday morning, I asked Emilia what she would like for breakfast. "Pancakes!" she said. I got dressed and poked my head into the bedroom and told her that she had 5 minutes to get ready as we were leaving. She protested and I then told her she now had 4 minutes and 30 seconds to get ready, or be left at home.(Emilia here, just for the record I WAS ready within the 5 minutes!)We drove to Lima and I took her to IHOP (International House of Pancakes), she had never been to one before...

A little rain would have been fine. A lot of rain would have been OK if it had fallen on drier soil. But we had just finished melting a foot of snow over weekend and the ground was saturated. So the water had no place to go. And when 4.9 inches of rain falls in about 30 hours, well it floods. And we weren't even the worst. Down in southern Illinois and Missouri some locations had over 12 inches of rain. The lower Mississippi is going to be dealing wit...
