Odori Park Sapporo Reviews
Odori Park in the summer means BEER GARDEN! Aug 01, 2011
Odori Park is Sapporo's central park with activities throughout the year.
Although it is famous for its Snow Festival in early February where large snow sculptures are on display, summer is a great time to visit as well.
During the summer, it is the venue for the city's 4-week long beer garden. From 1500-2200 everyday from mid-July to mid-August, all of Sapporo gather here to enjoy their summer over beer, snacks, and each others company.
The 6-block park serves as the main venue, with each block set up by different Japanese breweries, like Asahi, Kirin, Suntory, and including Sapporo Breweries Limited. A block with beers of the world is also setup.
During this visit, I was, of course, at the Sapporo Breweries Limited beer garden with my friend, Miki, a local of Sapporo. It was around 4pm on a Monday afternoon so the crowd was still light. But once the work hours ended, the park filled up and the crowd grew!
We ordered snacks - fried scallops and our Sapporo Classic. We also ordered their limited edition summer beer, Sapporo Summer Classic Special Furano Citrus. Only 100 glasses served every day and you need to line up for it!
The places get ridiculously packs especially on weekends, and after work hours. But it part of the fun as the locals, young and old, enjoy this event. It's an everyday, outdoor summer party --- for a whole month!
I had so much fun and I only spend no more than 2000yen (~US$ 20) despite all the beer and food I've drank!
Grab a seat, order your beer from one of the servers that is around and enjoy this open-air park beer garden, rubbing elbow with the locals!
