Odiham Castle Feb 08, 2012
It is also known as King John Castle - especially interesting in a wave of Robin Hood legends. Now it is ruined, but it was actually built by King John during his reign in XIII century.

You may read the story of this place on several signs on the site. It is said that this castle used to be a hunting lodge and a stronghold (even was under French attack), it has been a part of a rebellion and a prison for Scottish king . Also it is said that King John came from here to sign well-known Magna Carta. And it is the only octagonal keep in England.

In the very beginning the place was chosen because it was halfway between Windsor and Winchester.

Maybe not all of that is clear truth, but it is for sure that Odiham Castle had witnessed lots of historical events.

Now the restoration is finished, so you may easily find a footpath (but was not as easy to find a car park). Admission to the site is free. And also it is allowed to go with your dog there (don't forget dog waste bags).
