I lived here for several months. Really not bad.
Wai-O-Topu, Rotorua, Wellington, Christ Church ... All very nice places!
Actually New Zealand South even has more attractive scenes. You know 'The Lord of the rings', right? Then just come here to see the spectacular sites.

Heya,
I travelled New Zealand on 2001-2002 and easily found work at Atlantis Backpackers, a hostel in Picton (South island). Many hostels and farms are looking for workers, you can just walk in and ask - Kiwis are very friendly and will most likely do their best to help you.
You can also enter...

You can probably find some cheap flights to major cities. I planned a weekend to Sydney (flying from Melbourne) for less than $500, which also includes lodging at a youth hostel.
