i am a bit torn. while the food was not spectacular (and dare i say, below par), i was quite taken by the view. watching a beautiful santa monica sunset while supping was fabulous. true, there were other restaurants along ocean blvd that could have just as easily fit the bill for good sunset viewing, but i am not reviewing those right now, aren't i?

ok, enough of the sass and on to the review.

every year, a few restaurants in or around la participate in a 2-week dine la program. the idea is that the participating restaurants get to lure diners in by offering a sampling of the food they usually serve through prix fixe menus - 3 courses - at a set price; one for lunch and/or one for dinner. one usually has a choice of an appetizer, a main course and a dessert. for this restaurant, the price was $35 plus tax and tip for the prix fixe dinner menu (thanks for the correction, jen).

the appetizer choices were: lobster taquitos, scallops and another dish that escapes me right now. i chose the lobster taquitos because it was supposed to be a signature dish. bad sign that THAT was the signature dish. the lobster was overwhelmed by the flavor of the fried corn tortilla and the tomato sauce in which the lobster was marinating in.

the main course choices were: a white fish of the day, prime culotte and a pasta vegetarian dish. the server (who was friendly, helpful and not intrusive) informed me that he would not recommend the white fish. i do appreciate such honesty and thus, i took him up on his offer. the problem is that i don't eat the cow, so i was stuck with the pasta. i thought i could have cooked better pasta, and those who know me know that i don't cook. the sauce tasted like it came out of a bottle (or can).

there were also dessert choices but only one really stood out: the chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream on the side. this was what i had. as much as everything else has disappointed me, i did enjoy this cake. it was not too sweet - both the cake and the icing. it was good (although not spectacular).

jen, my dining buddy, decided to order off the main menu and opted for the cioppino. her meal was definitely better than mine although the shrimp could have been more tender.

the verdict: come for the view not the food.

Sybil and I went to Ocean Ave Seafood during DineLA so they had prix fixe menus that would allow us to have 3 courses at a fraction of the price. Unfortunately, none of the items on this menu appealed to me, and I ordered the cioppino, which turned out to be wonderful.

This is a difficult place to gauge, because some items are great and while others are mediocre. However, all items are very expensive, so pick carefully!

Sybil ordered some lobster taquitos, which sounds average but tasted wonderful, with dallops of guacamole and sour cream. The cioppino was lovely, with sweet shrimp, clams and lobster. The chocolate cake was to die for with sweet, fresh strawberry slices! However, the pasta primavera was mediocre.

I recommend this place for those who want to try good seafood and have a little extra cash to spend. Servers are really young/good looking here too!

Ocean Ave Seafood is a seafood restaurant located within walking distance of the 3rd St. Promenade in Santa Monica. I would give it 3 stars because the food wasn't terrible, but it was just way overpriced. I ordered Cod served with a sweet glaze sauce and complemented by bok choy and rice. The bok choy was pretty good, but the rice literally looked like it had just been dumped out of a bown upside down onto the side of my plate. Not much for presentation...

The cod was good but not really noteworthy. Overall the experience was average, but the prices were far above average.

My theory is that you can tell almost anything you need to know about a restaurant by the kind of bread they serve. If the bread is homemade, served warm, freshly sliced and delicious, the entrees usually follow suit. You can tell a lot about the kind of care a restaurant is going to put into your food by the care they put into selecting and serving your bread. If, however, the bread is average, then you can expect your food to be the same. This was the case with Ocean Ave Seafood.

Still looking for a good seafood place in LA!

Aww that's terrible! There's a lovely (although pricey) seafood place near this one called I Cugini. I went there during prix fix season so was able to sample their wonderful seafood for a fraction of the original price.
