Obelisk of Luxor Paris Reviews
Stunning Egyptian icon in Paris! Dec 30, 2010
Taking pride of place at Place de la Concorde is this stunning Luxor Obelisk, a magnificent artefact which originates from the entrance of the Luxor Temple in Egypt.
I wondered whether the artefact was looted but it certainly wasn’t - it was offered by the Viceroy of Egypt to France in the nineteenth century. As a gesture of goodwill, the monument was even offered back to the people of Egypt in the 1990s.
The monument stands where a guillotine used to during the French Revolution! These days, the area is quite smart and it‘s quite a nice area to walk around!
The detail on the monument is rather captivating; the hieroglyphics extol the reign of Ramses II.
You will definitely pass this area of Paris during your visit I’m sure, and will have the opportunity to see this monument without consciously doing so. When you do bump into it though, I recommend a closer look as opposed to a quick two-seconds for a stare and a quick picture!
