Oatman began as a small gold mining camp. In 1915 two miners found the mother load and that was all it took to put Oatman on the map. The town was named after a girl named Olive Oatman that was captured by Indians and rescued near this location. The mining company closed operations in 1924. With the mining company closed and a fire three years earlier, Oatmans population dropped dramatically. The only thing that kept is alive is that Route 66 goes right through the center of town. Today the town is not much more than a tourist attraction. There is a hotel, in which Clark Gable and Carol Lombard spent their honeymoon. Wild burros wander the streets. There are annual events throughout the year, including a burro bisket toss and a sidewalk egg frying contest. There are all kinds of shops here that sell nearly any souvenir that you could think of. A lot of the items are hand made by the local people.

Had a great visit out west, mostly to southern Utah. Visited many national and state parks. I think my favorites were Zion NP and Kodachrome SP, though it is tough to choose. Anyway, I don't need to go to Europe now because all the Europeans were over here :). I'd estimate 80% or more of the people in the national parks were from Europe (even more when you got on the trails). Met many great people from all over. This is a beautiful part of the world. Enjoy the pictures!

Pictures from my travels around California. I went on a tour with Suntrek, and we had a really good group of people from all over the world!

Our room at the Comfort Inn in Kingman was sitting right on historic Route 66, which would take us to the tiny town of Oatman, Arizona. All we had to do was pull out of the parking lot and turn right. Once we passed out of the Kingman city limits, the well-maintained 4-lane highway changed into a narrow twisty-turny road with no shoulders and in desperate need of repair.
