Cayo Coco is meant to be one of the best tourist locations in Cuba, and the Oasis Playa Coco hotel is suppose to be the best tourist hotel on the island. Some people might agree with this whereas others might disagree. There were a number of people who had upgraded to this hotel whilst I was there, and a couple of people who had moved out to another hotel… I will give you my experience of my one week stay here and you can draw your own conclusions.

The Resort

The resort has a lot to offer and it is located by the beach with rooms all over the resort, it was a shame though that some of what the resort had to offer was not open or up to the standards you would expect it to be. The resort has everything you need if you just want to go there to relax and unwind; it has a swimming pool (with a swim-up bar), fitness suite (with air conditioning), tennis courts, massage parlour (which was not open at the time), small shop and lots more. There is a scooter hire place just at the front of the resort, so if you would like to hire these, you will need you passport and drivers licence (there is nothing within walking distance of the resort).

The resort is a 4 star resort, some may agree with this whereas others may disagree. It has a lot to offer with friendly staff on hand willing to help with whatever you need help with.

Rooms

Rooms vary, all have a balcony, but not all have a sea view (which some people may prefer), and you can choose to be located near the beach if you wish to be. The rooms come with a bathroom, a tv, air conditioning system, hair dryer and some complimentary bath soaps. Your towels are changed every day and you beds are made for you. The maids are friendly and do leave some decorative art in the bathroom and on the beds with the towels (see photos which I have added).

Families

This is a perfect place for families, couple and friends. There is a shallow area within the swimming pool where children can swim and families can hang out and entertainment is provided to children if you choose to go with any. In the evening, entertainment is provided for children, where staff will play games with them and generally entertainment. The show usually runs from 7-9pm (after the childrens show is the adults show which in most cases is suitable for children).

Staff

The entertainment staff are very friendly and polite, and they remember you which is always a nice bonus. They are located around the resort doing different things but in the evening they provide evening entertainment. During the day they are providing entertainment in and around the swimming pool as well as around the resort. Ask them and they will teach you to salsa!

Food

Breakfast is served in the same room every morning, with the same options (there isn't much of a choice). Omelettes are made to your taste and in front of you and so are your fried eggs, crepes and waffles on some days. Everything else, you can just help yourself to and tea and coffee is served to you by staff.

For lunch there are a few places you can go, there is a snack bar, a beach bar and two out of the three restaurants are open at lunch time (the one open in the evening is closed), so you can get lunch from wherever you are. The lunch menu does at the snack bar and the beach bar are the same, but at the restaurant you have a choice of seafood, Italian or Japanese depending on which ones are open.

There is a range of food available for dinner, though for Japanese, Italian and sea food you have to make reservations. Definitely worth trying out. You are only able to attend Japanese, Italian and sea food one during your stay, for the rest of the days you have to eat at the buffet.

Alcohol

There are a number of bars around the resort. You have one next to the beach, a swim-up bar, one in the snack bar and one near the main reception (piano bar). They serve a range of different drinks (mainly rum) but there is something for everyone.

Resort Shops

There is a shop located on the resort. You are able to purchase necessities there if you happen to run out and you can buy souvenirs here too. Although this is the only shop on the resort, there are some mini stalls where you can purchase souvenirs such as keyrings, bracelets and necklaces, just outside the reception foyer.

Beach

You are able to do water sports on the beach, these are those that are none motorised, like kayaking and sailing. While I was out there I never saw any motorised water sports taking place, nor did I see a centre where you could hire motorised water sports equipment on the beach. The water is perfect for a swim and there are allocated swimming areas. Not to worry too much though as the water is rather shallow and a life guard is on the beach during the day. The sea water is rather salty and you may find that it irritates your eyes after a while. Sun lounges are also located on the beach, and you are able to help yourself to them.

A fresh beach towel is available for everyone and can be collected everyday (as long as it is returned), there is a deposit of 15pesos per towel required.

Excursions

There are a number of excursions you can choose from. There is one that takes you into Havana (you can choose from a day trip, an overnight trip or a 3day trip), one that takes you on a speed boat, one that takes you on a catamaran, and a few others. All the excursions that are for the day; they will pick you up in the morning, and drop you back late afternoon, evening time. Alcohol is provided on a lot of the excursions and meals are provided on some. These are for everyone, so you can go as a family.

If you are a fan of scuba diving, I wish you luck if you want to try and book a dive or a course, as when I asked about these, I was sent round in circles and no one really knew anything concrete on how I could get involved with scuba diving whilst I was on holiday (I had asked the resort reception, my holiday rep, and the water sports centre on the beach).

Surrounding Area

There is nothing in the surroundings areas which you can walk to, not from the front of the resort or from along the beach. It is a fairly closed resort with nothing nearby, you would have to get transportation if you wanted to go anywhere outside the resort.

Entertainment

At night the staff put together a show, first for children, and then for adults (from 9pm to 11pm). After 11pm the disco opens where you are able to go and have a boogie and a few drinks, this is located just by the reception. Also at about 11pm on some nights, there are trips to the local bat cave which is a disco in a cave (it's meant to be really good!). All the details of the weeks entertainment are put up on boards for you to view.

During the day there is also entertainment provided, a list of what is going on during the week and at what time of the day is also put up on a board fro all to see, so you know where what is and if you would like to join in, where you need to be and at what time.
