Oasis Leisure Centre
Oasis Leisure Centre London Reviews
Getting an outdoor swim in Covent Garden Jun 15, 2010
Oasis leisure centre in Covent Garden is a council-run leisure centre with an outdoor pool. There is an indoor pool too, but it is often being used for classes and things like that and the outdoor pool is open to the public all the time. There are also sports classes and a small gym – I don’t know if they are open to the public or not, and this review is mostly just of the outdoor pool.
London is a hot, humid city in summer, and there are a surprising number of surviving, historic, lidos. This isn’t one of them. The oasis leisure centre is a mid twentieth century council pool. It is very practical, 27 metres long, and when I went, absolutely everyone was swimming lengths to keep fit rather than playing. Personally, I liked that, because I was there to get some exercise rather than to play. On hotter days and on weekends, I think it might be more relaxed, as there is a large sun deck for sunbathing and there seems to be a little café, too. The pool is heated to a lovely warm temperature, which given it was not the hottest day when I went, was very nice indeed.
There are large changing rooms but they are basic; there is no spinning thing to dry your costume in, the showers are a tad on the dribbling side, there are no private changing cubicles and the lockers charge a non-refundable 20p which means that if you open your locker to get your shampoo out then you have to find another 20p to lock the locker again, or shower whilst watching your handbag. But the hairdryers are free and in a separate room so that the changing rooms don’t get all hot and sticky. And these are minor gripes, really. The fact is that you can go to an outdoor swimming pool without membership, right in the heart of the tourist district of London, and get some exercise in.
I will definitely, definitely be going back.
