Oak Street Beach Chicago Reviews
One of the best Great Lakes Beaches Jul 03, 2011
After Dr. Beach proclaimed Oak Street Beach in Chicago as one of the five best beaches on the Great Lakes (America's Third Coast), we went here to see what makes it so great.
First off, there doesn't seem to be any beach parking, so we had to park along the street ($6 for two hours). There may be better parking near by, but I don't know where.
Oak Street Beach is a fairly large beach, one of the biggest I've been to, and I've been to beaches in California, Florida, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. Also, the sand here is very comparable to many of the other beaches. In terms of sand and appearance of the beach, you might think that you're someplace more tropical. Of course, the lack of palm trees around the beach, or Chicago's imposing skyline right next to the beach will soon bring you back to reality that you're still in the Midwest. And if that isn't enough of a reminder, try going for a swim. The cold water, even over the July Fourth weekend, will make sure you don't spend too much time there. This is the first beach I've been to where some of the lifeguards are in boats off shore as well, presumably so that they don't need to swim too far in the cold water to help save someone.
There were a lot of people here, and there are many amenities to enjoy, including rest rooms, food, and volleyball courts.
