Oak Hotel is a good, cheap hotel for budget travelers. For a 2-twin bed room with private bath, we paid about $35 per person/nite. They provided free internet, kitchen use, and w/d (200Y for washer, 100Y for dryer 30min). Our room was small, but I didn't expect any bigger anyway. The bathroom is way small but again, I wasn't expecting anything bigger. The room provided all comforts except it got a bit tooooo hot during the day. The room had a heater but for some reason we could not turn it off, even unplugging, the heater was still running. The AC was not strong at all. We opened the window, but it wasn't much help for a breeze esp since the next building was only like 3 feet away. It did cool down at night though.
All in all, I think the hotel was a great price. The room was always clean. The staff was very friendly and spoke English. They helped us with maps and directions. Good location in Ueno (between Ueno and Asakusa). Can get to any area in Tokyo via the JR Yamanote line. It's about a 10 min. walk to the JR station but maybe like 3 min. or less walk to the Tokyo Metro subway. Asakusa (Kappabashi-dori) is a walk away and there's a 99Yen store two blocks away. There's also plenty of cheap restaurants to eat around there. Part of the Golden Week in Japan 2007 travel blog |

Value in Tokyo Oct 09, 2008
Decent location. Normally the price of this place would be considered expensive but this is Tokyo and for this city it is good value. The only trouble with this place are the thin walls. You can hear everything on your floor.
Remember this is Japan. The rooms are small and the beds are equally small. You get a small TV. The rooms kind of reminded me of my college's dorms. They are very clean though and the service is basic but very friendly and knowledgeable. The staff here speak a number of different languages and are a mixture of Japanese and foreigners. Best of all I could walk there from my hotel without having to navigate the Tokyo subway system. Armed with a printed out map, the Oak Hotel has free internet, and my compass I marched back towards Ueno Station and Ueno Park. The park was quite nice. It was not too busy… Anyone seen my camera? |

I stayed at a hotel called the Oak Hotel which was recommended by another travel buddy member. The hotel is a bit of a hike from Ueno Station and is a bit hard to find as it is located at end of a small lane. However it is cheap… Arriving in the Land of the Rising Sun |

LOL
Went back to the hotel, got Gabs and headed to Mr. Donut so Gabs could get some breakfast. From there, since most of the stores on Kappabashi-dori was still closed, we continued on to Asakusa - which is NOT very far from Ueno. It is probably a 10-15 min. walk. We arrived at Nakamise-dori, a street full of stores… Day 7 - Last Full Day! |
