Tries real hard, but there's something.... Jan 04, 2010
I'm giving this hotel an average rating, because it ultimately fulfills the goal of giving you a place to dump your stuff and sleep that isn't completely nasty. That being said...
It's downtown, where there isn't much to do. Yes, there are stadiums and a concert hall and whatnot, but there isn't something there every night. And when there isn't, the downtown core mostly shuts down with the businesses at 5PM. The night life in LA is elsewhere. If you are downtown for work, then the location is okay, but for traveling, you can do better for the price.
They have gone for a pseudo-European retro boutique look, but based on the room I stayed in, they achieved this by buy old furniture. Not old in antique way, but old in a used way. From the style, colour and wear pattern on the desk chair, I'd wager it was originally made in the early 80s, but trying for a 60s look. It looked like the 80s version of the 60s. It was falling apart.
While the room was generally tidy, there is a bank of switches on the wall next to the bed to turn on/off most of the lights in the place. Handy in concept. However, half the switches were damaged and cracked and they showed what looked like a few months accumulation finger prints and dirt.
The washrooms were okay, but the sink was horrible. It was this straight sided, high rimmed affair. You had to waste a massive amount of water to get the smallest accumulation. On top of this, the faucet is mounted externally to the basin and quite high. Turning it to more than a trickle would cause water to splash all over the place. It looks okay, but doesn't work all that well.
It does it's job, but you could do better for the money not too far away.
