Nunhead Cemetery London Reviews
The forgotten one... Dec 22, 2008
They will tell you Nunhead is the least known of the Magnificent Seven en they are probably right. They also claim it is the most beautiful, but I have to disagree there. Nature has reclaimed most of the cemetery and that gives it that eerie feel, but Nunhead is no Highgate.
Still, the imposing, roofless chapel in itself is worth the visit. Providing you're willing to make the trek out there.
You can get to the cemetery by Rail. Just head to Nunhead Station. Or take bus 343 or P12. Or, you can do as I did and take the East London Line of the Tube to New Cross Gate.
Then, however, you go right on New Cross Road, cross the street and go left on Jerningham Road. Keep going untill you get to the roundabout. Take the second street counter clockwise. This is Kitto Road. Continue down this street. At the T, go right and immediately left. This is Gibbon Road. Pass Kimberly Avenue, cross the street and go left between the buildings. This will bring you to Linden Grove. Go right and cross the street. The cemetery entrance should be right there.
The cemetery opened in 1840 and after falling in disarray, was re-opened in 2001. There are tours on the last sunday of every month, run by the 'Friends of Nunhead Cemetery' or FONC.
