Nungwi Overview

Nungwi is a fishing village and a tourist attraction located at the northernmost tip of Unguja (Zanzibar Island), Tanzania. It is within the Unguja North Region.

In the past it was mostly known as a dhow boatyard.

Until the 1990s, the local population was opposed to tourism. Nungwi's beach is one of the last in the area to host hotels and other touristic structures. Tourism is now becoming current, but there are marks that the population is still not completely used to it. Signs are visible asking to respect the population's customs, especially regarding clothing. Locals may also react impulsively against pictures.

The main beach of Nungwi is nicknamed "Jambo Square". There is also a small aquarium with sea turtles.
