Novy Afon Overview

New Athos (Novy Afon in Russian, Afon Ch'yts in Abkhaz, Akhali Atoni in Georgian) is a small resort town north west of Sokhumi in the breakaway republic of Abkhazia.

Founded by monks preparing to flee from Mt Athos in Greece, the town grew around a huge monastery complex on a hillside overlooking the Black Sea which was never fully occupied. During Soviet times, it was used as a museum and a hospital, but was restored in the 1990s and now attracts coachloads of tourists.

Aside from the monastery, Novy Afon has many other attractions, such as the extensive cave system which even has an underground train line in it, Anacopia Fortress, the picturesque abandoned Psyrtskha Railway Station hanging over a lake, the cave church of St Simon the Zealot, a brand new seaside park, and a clean pebbly beach.

Novy Afon makes a very easy day trip from Sokhumi, taking just under an hour by bus.
