Novotel Paris Porte d'Orleans Reviews
Great location and above average service! Jan 03, 2011
The Novotel Porte d' Orleans is a 3-star hotel located in the south of the city at the péripherique (ring road around Paris). I booked this hotel because it was the only reasonably priced hotel left in its category for NYE. Usually I stay around Gare du Nord and was worried that this hotel would be too far away from the center, but it was surprisingly well accessible.
The Novotel Porte d' Orleans is only a few steps away from Porte d' Orleans metro station, the south end of line 4. In only 30 minutes the subway took us from Gare du Nord to Porte d' Oreans without transferring.
Another advantage of staying near the edge of the centre, is that the area is more residential/business and rather quiet and safe at night.
Because the hotel was jam-packed on NYE, we were given a smoking room. Even though the receptionist said it would not smell, it really stunk of tobacco! As we wouldn't return to the room until late, we decided to stick it out, but made it a point of switching rooms the next day.
Upon check-in the receptionist was extremely friendly. We were heartily welcomed, received good info about the city and the cancelled NYE celebrations and the receptionist apologised sincerely for the lack of non-smoking rooms available.
The room in itself was light and spacious (very spacious for Paris!) and contained a big double bed as well as a foldable sofa bed. The bathroom, though small, had all necessary amenities including a hair drier and a big bath tub annex shower. The toilet was not in the bathroom itself but behind a separate door.
Even though the taps and fittings were modern, it was very hard to adjust the tap to the desired heat. It was either too cold or too hot as the tap was too rigid to fine tune the temperature.
We didn't return until late on NYE and fell asleep right away, but after waking up in the morning the smell of cigarette smoke was unbearable. The tobacco scent was in the bed covers, pillows, everywhere!
Fortunately we could change rooms right after breakfast. The non-smoking room, looked exactly the same, though smelled much fresher. Here the colorful accents were in red, while in the smoking room they were blue.
Since we were now on the 7th floor, we even had a view all the way till the Eifel tower!
In this room, the tap was easier to adjust, but the shower head came off several times during showering.
ALso this room had tea and coffee making facilities, but the kettle was downright filthy! The pot was full of dried chocolate or coffee and seemed to have been over-looked by the chamber maids more than once!
We paid extra for the buffet breakfast, which was very good for Parisian standards and included apart from bread, cereal, toast and pastries also fresh fruits and hot items.
Overall I would say that compared to other hotels I staid in Paris, the Novotel Porte d' Orléans is very good value for money thanks to the good location, spacious rooms and fair prices.
We paid EUR 98.00 for a room that could accommodate up to 4 people (one double + 1 sofa bed). Buffet breakfast sets you back EUR 15.00 pp. Compare this to more centrally located hotels and you'll find it might be worth venturing a bit further out of the centre.
