About 25km west of Alicante you´ll find the lovely town of Novelda. Formerly a Moorish fortress town, it now hosts the Spanish marble industry and is well known for its vineyards and saffron fields. In addition to the marble mines, you´ll find mines of limestone, silica, clay and gypsum. It has an area of 75.7 km² and, according to the 2003 census, a total population of 25,399 inhabitants.

Lots of 17th century architecture can be seen around any of the main city squares. The magnificent City Hall has a beautifully restored facade. Start at City Hall for a great walk through the old town streets.

Settled by Greeks, it was, through the years, controlled by Carthaginians and Romans. The prime example of Muslim presence in the Novelda Valley is the Castle of Mola, some three kilometers northwest of the town. It´s unique triangular tower is a sight not to be missed. Next to the Castle you´ll find il Santuario Santa Maria Magdalena, the Guadiesque church built in 1918.
