An excellent art musuem in Pasadena Oct 24, 2010
The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena is one of the must-see art museums in the Los Angeles area. The museum's collections emphasize European painting and sculpture from the 14th to 20th centuries, American and European Modern and Contemporary art, and Asian art. Works by Bellini, El Greco, Rembrandt, Fragonard, among others, are on display. The museum has a significant Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collection, with an emphasis on Degas. Asian art, primarily sculpture, is housed in a wing on the lower level.

The Norton Simon Museum was founded by a merger of the former Pasadena Art Museum's collection and the private collection of industrialist Norton Simon. Simon had collected European art beginning the the 1950s and Asian art in the 1960.

A sculpture garden is arranged outside of the museum's entrance.

I was pleased that the museum was open until 9:00 p.m. on Friday evenings, which allowed me time to visit.

Admission is $8. Non-flash photography is permitted.

Most underrated art museum in LA! May 06, 2008
I have been to most of the major art museums in LA, and I love the Norton Simon the most! In terms of art, the collection is breathtaking, with paintings and sculptures from all the major periods, and artists such as Rubens, Degas, Van Gogh, Diego Rivera, and Pablo Picasso. On top of that, there is an amazing collection of ancient Buddhist and Hindu sculptures. It's near Old Pasadena, an area of town with great shopping and restaurants. It's free for students and cheap for everyone else.

Small but great museum Jul 19, 2008
This museum was started by Norton Simon (1907-1993) with the private collection of Mr. Simon who began collecting art in the 1950s.

When you first walk up the entrance you are greeted by statuary that is both gorgeous and thought provoking. This was a great taste of what was to come.

Walking through the door a large stone Buddha statue dominates the room. Behind him are the glass doors to the garden area with a pond and more statuary. It is a soothing scene and one I would have liked to have spent more time contemplating, but we had to get move on if we were to see everything before it closed.

The Norton Simon contains a few instantly recognizable paintings but mostly unknowns by very well known artists such as: Van Gogh, Rubens, Rembrandt, Kandinsky, Picasso, Degas, and Toulouse-Lautrec, to name a few. One of the more striking wings of the museum is the South Asian gallery. It contains many statues, wall reliefs, bronze and gold statues from India and Southeast Asia. My favorite part of that wing is the stone Buddha statue sitting outside all on his own amidst a garden sanctuary.

When we were there the main exhibit was a retrospective of the artist Marcel Duchamp called Redux. He is an artist that I’m unfamiliar with but he has a very cheeky sense of humor so it was fun to see his work. All in all the Norton Simon is a delightful and small museum that is a great way to spend a few hours of your day!
