The Northside Cafe in Winterset Iowa is a little like walking through a time-machine and into the past....to about the 1950s. Winterset Iowa is a small, close-knit farming community. The downtown area has a 'square' and (since it is the county seat) a courthouse. I've seen many of these communities with dying downtown areas where the only thing that doesn't go out of business seems to be the courthouse. But Winterset is thriving. I can't recall seeing a vacant or unopened building on the square. (And yes, Lord_Mike, they DO have Verizon service here! lol)

One of these thriving businesses downtown is the Northside Cafe. Once you enter inside the long and narrow restaurant you know you're stepping back in time. The decor, the furnishings, the counter, the floor, the lighting...all original and all from a time before even I was roaming the good earth. On the walls are a collection of framed photographs of celebrities who have dined in the cafe. I was surprised to see some of them. Even Oprah Winfrey had been here. Of course, what made this place famous was the movie "Bridges of Madison County", which explains why you'll see that Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep have also dined at the cafe. And it doesn't hurt that you have another celebrity born in Winterset; The "Duke" John Wayne.

As for the service and food....they were both better than average. I had eggs, pancakes and coffee. You won't find much of anything fancy on their menu, just the 'meat and potatoes' kind of diet you'd expect to see in farmland country.

Iowa, huh. I always think of the Bridges of Madison Country and the actors Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood.

Bridges of Madison County
I shamelessly admit that I have not seen the movie or read the book, but visiting the bridges of Madison County in person was somewhat charming, if not altogether nostalgic. Having a few covered brid…Winterset we ate at the Northside Cafe for lunch. Famous for the movie, a few other celebrities have also dined…
