A taste of scandinavia in Brighton Jul 05, 2012
The Northern Lights is a place where you can get a good selection of Scandinavian booze as well as great Scandinavian food too. The bar is run by Scandinavians and quite a few of the patrons are as well which instantly lets you know this is more than just a sales gimmick. Its warm interior, friendly staff and excellent service make it easy to understand why many Scandinavian’s in Brighton consider it a home away from home.

The pub is split over 2 floors with it being possible to reserve the upstairs or just a few tables for functions. The best way to describe the setting/atmosphere in here is cosy.

There is a fine selection of Swedish spirits on offer (Absolute, Salty Mary just to name a couple) and Tuborg (a Danish favourite) is available on tap. There are many Scandinavian ciders (rekorderlig, kopperberg) available as well. For those brave enough you can even try one of the crazy spirit mixes, my favourite being the fireball which consists of some Finnish whiskey and cinnamon schnapps and Tabasco sauce.

The food here is consistently good and on the menu you have everything from a typical choice of Swedish meatballs to Sautéed reindeer. The quality of the dishes is very high and good value for the price as this can arguably be called Gastro pub food not to mention the pub is located centrally and there are a lot of restaurants in that part of Brighton to choose from.

The northern lights is a quiet place to come for a drink and chat during the week but things certainly pick up at the weekends. You tend to get a mix of primarily you professionals and Brighton hipsters in here and the vibe always remains warm and friendly. They occasionally have a DJ set up upstairs and clear a few chairs away to make a small dance area. There is also giant Jenga on offer for those that want some form of interactive entertainment with their drinks. When we played by the end we had quite an audience which made for a fun and exciting game.

The Northern Lights is somewhere I recommend anyone coming for a quiet drink and nice food early in the evening but it can easily be a place you end up staying put in.
