North Yorkshire Overview

'God's own County'

North Yorkshire is England's largest county and one of the most rural. It is divided into 7 districts - Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate, Richmondshire, Ryedale, Scarborough and Selby.
Each with its own distinct, natural beauty and charm.

York, Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland are unitary authority boroughs which form part of the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, but do not come under county council control.

The largest settlement in the administrative county is Harrogate, while in the ceremonial county it is York.

To the west of the county lie the Yorkshire Dales National Park in the Pennine hills, displaying a patchwork of fields and dry-stone walls. The countryside is breathtaking with many natural features and an abundance of rivers and streams, waterfalls and tarns. The highest point is Whernside, on the Cumbrian border, at 2,414 feet (736 m).

To the East are the North York Moors National Park, another area of outstanding natural beauty with heather smothered moors. The three major rivers in the county are the River Swale, River Ure and the River Tees.

At the eastern edge of the county is the coast, with spectacular cliffs and sweeping sands. There are towns with narrow winding cobbled streets and majestic Victorian holiday resorts. Between the Dales and the Moors lies the Vale of York with the ancient city of York itself.
