Separated by a thin strait north of Isla Baltra and Isla Santa Cruz, Isla Seymour is often referred to as North Seymour Island, while Isla Baltra is often called the South Seymour Island. Having similar flora and vegetation such as the Prickly Pear Cacti and salt bushes, Isla Seymour is very similar to Isla Baltra because they have both been created from geological uplift.
Quite a small island in terms of land mass, Isla Seymour is definitely worth visiting. To explore the island, follow a circular trail roughly 2 km long leading inland and along the rocky coast that will take you through some of the biggest sea bird breeding colonies in the entire Galapagos. Here you will find birds nesting, mating and rearing their chicks all year round. Blue-footed Boobies and Frigatebirds are the main attractions here. Since most of the wildlife and birds in the Galapagos Islands are quite fearless, it is possible for visitors to get an up close view of the nests of many of the birds here, including the lovely Swallow-tailed Gulls and bright Yellow Warblers. Along the coast, one can also spot sea lions and marine iguanas swimming close to the shore. With Isla Daphne off in the distance, North Seymour Island has a nice dive site to the south, where one can discover the magnificent beauty and diversity of the Galapagos.

After a hike on North Seymour Island in the morning it was time to say goodbye to our first group of ship mates and our guide, Juan, who was off on his holidays. We waited on the beach on Baltra Island while the boat was cleaned and refuelled and then went back on board to await the arrival of the new crew! We were joined by Eva, Jodie and Corrie from Canada, Phil and Maria from UK, Marie from Denmark and Emilio and Jeordie from Spain. Over lunch we started to learn about one another before he...

With the ¨help¨of a 5:30 a.m. wake up there was enough time for a quick walking tour around the bird colonies on North Seymour island. The highlight of this is watching the frigate bird mating rituals, with the male´s red chest puffed out to draw the females in. Sort of like watching an English backpacker after a few days at Coogee beach really :) There were also blue-footed boobies scattered around the island, so something different to finish the tour with anyway.
