The North Eastern Railway War Memorial consists of 54 foot high Portland stone tapered obelisk that rises from the rear of a three-sided screen wall, to the centre of the memorial is a monolith that raises to 12 foot and bears the inscription “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE”. There is another inscription to the rear of the memorial that reads "IN REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE MEN OF THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY THE COMPANY PLACES THIS MONUMENT" with the dates of the First World War inscribed either side. The memorial was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and was first unveiled 14 June 1924 by Field Marshall Lord Plummer and re-dedicated in 1984
