North China Chinese Restaurant Gatlinburg Reviews
Delicious Chinese food in quaint tourist town May 25, 2012
North China Restaurant is located in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, only a few miles away from The Great Smoky Mountains. We found this restaurant on our first day in Gatlinburg, and liked it so much we ate there again on our last day there.
The first night, after getting to Gatlinburg, we were starving so we asked around, and locals recommended this for a Chinese restaurant.
Since it was after 9pm, we were seated quickly as there weren't too many people eating at the time. We looked at the menu, and it was all Americanized versions of Chinese food. However, after a few minutes of trying to decide, a waiter came out and told us about the specials, basically dishes they cook for Chinese people who don't want the Americanized version. This included spicy tofu and fried fish and vegetables. We ordered that, and also an order of Hunan Chicken.
The second time we went, we ordered the same tofu (yet they make it somewhat different, with different seasoning, but delicious as well), chicken and vegetable curry, beef and vegetables, and half a roasted duck. It was very good, especially the curry and duck.
For three people for dinner, ordering three dishes, it costs around $30-35. The duck was slightly more expensive.
The service wasn't as good as other Chinese restaurants. The male waiter was older and nice and friendly, and we all chatted for a while. However, the girl who seated us and took our orders was pretty abrupt, and took our plates and dishes before we were even done with them. She also gave us our check about halfway through our meal, and we weren't even close to finishing. We got the feeling she didn't want the business.
The decor was nice, but looked like most other Chinese restaurants. This is one restaurant that seemed to get many repeat customers, which is rare because it's located in a tourist town where people aren't normally from there. However, we noticed several people that came in after we did, and the staff apparently knew them very well and were very nice to them.
Overall, this was a great restaurant with delicious Chinese dishes that's not too expensive. Even though the service could have been a little better, don't let that deter you from trying this restaurant if you're ever in the Gatlinburg area.
