North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher Kure Beach Reviews
NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher Oct 09, 2009
The family went on a field trip last weekend to a nearby institution, the North Carolina Aquarium. This is one of three state sponsored aquariums, and being located just south of Wilmington, the aquarium focuses on the Cape Fear environs. It is also beautifully nestled in scrubby woods right along the beach. We waited until after Labor Day to miss the crowds, but were surprised at how full the parking lots were on a mid-September Sunday afternoon.
But despite the number of cars and the relatively small size of this venue, the aquarium is remarkably well designed and we never felt crowded. Though it doesn’t have any big ticket attractions (like an outdoor pool reserved for dolphin or whale performances), the interior has a diverse collection of aquatic animals accompanied by quality displays…and since its in the southeastern US, there are alligators!
We thoroughly enjoyed the intimate setting and even more so the final exodus. You can walk out of the aquarium to a back porch with ample seating and a snack bar with quite a menu. The porch leads to a pathway through the woods where there are plenty of flowers, ponds and areas to watch birds and ducks, a very nice finish! You’ll have to visit an aquarium in a major city if you want some jaw dropping entertainment, but for a peaceful day that leaves you feeling a bit more connected to nature, the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher comes highly recommended.
